Medieval wooden sculpture and portraits in plaster, bronze and marble

The oldest items are wooden church sculptures from the Middle Ages, but the collection is dominated by sculptures in plaster, bronze and marble from later periods, many of them portraits. Prominent 18th and 19th century artists represented in the collection are Johan Tobias Sergel and Johan Niclas Byström.

Sculptures from the turn of the last century

Sculptures from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries form an important part of the collection, with works by, among others, Carl Milles and Carl Eldh. Several female sculptors from the period are also represented, including Gerda Sprinchorn, Ruth Milles and Agnes de Frumerie.

Plaster casts of classical sculpture

The collection also includes plaster casts of ancient sculptures acquired in the mid-1800s. These were intended to increase the status of the university as a cultural institution, but they were also used in teaching. The collection contains approximately 300 plaster casts, a number of which are exhibited in the University Main Building.
