A course on Active Bystander Training or Bystander Intervention aimed at providing an overview of what harassment and sexual harassment are and how they can manifest themselves, as well as tools to intervene and support victims.

This course is aimed at

  • All employees

Topic

  • Work environment

If harassment, sexual harassment or other inappropriate behaviour occurs in our workplace, it is important that the employer takes action. As employees and colleagues, we can all make a difference and counteract offensive behaviour when we see it happening. What can those of us who witness inappropriate behaviour or harassment do to stop it? How can we support people who are exposed? How do we challenge an unhealthy culture in our workplace? This training addresses these questions.

Active Bystander Training or Bystander Intervention is a research-based approach to bullying, harassment, abuse and victimization. What characterizes this method is that it does not focus on the person being victimized, nor on the perpetrator or problem creator. Instead, it addresses third parties, i.e. those around them.

Purpose and objectives

This training is given as part of the university's preventive work environment and equal opportunities work and aims to give participants a general understanding of what harassment and sexual harassment are and how they can manifest themselves. Participants will be given tools to intervene and act when they notice inappropriate/abusive behaviour or harassment and to be able to support people who are exposed.

After completing the training, participants should:

  • Know what bystander effect is and recognize inappropriate/abusive behaviour
  • Be able to use different tools to intervene in an unwanted situation
  • Feel more confident to speak up
