Signalmolekylen GABA (γ-aminosmörsyra) och dess roll i hjärnan, bukspottkörtelns öar och i vita blodkroppar.
GABA Lab vid Uppsala universitet grundades 2008 av professor Birnir och fokuserar på den extracellulära signalmolekylen GABA (γ-aminosmörsyra) och dess roll i hjärnan, i bukspottkörtelns öar och i vita blodkroppar. I hjärnan minskar GABA nervcellers excitabilitet och är den huvudsakliga hämmande och lugnande signalsubstansen. I pankreasöarna modulerar GABA insulin- och glukagonutsöndringen och främjar underhållet av cellerna som tillverkar insulin. I vita blodkroppar reglerar GABA frisättningen av både inflammatoriska och antiinflammatoriska molekyler från cellerna och even antal av immunceller. GABA verkar vara en viktig homeostatisk molekyl som främjar balans och hälsa. På grund av vikten av GABA-signalering i fysiologi, är läkemedel som verkar på GABA-systemet mycket viktiga vid många sjukdomar, t.ex. psykiatriska och neurodegenerativa sjukdomar liksom epilepsi och diabetes.
