Cardiology

Two doctors in protective gear operating on a patient.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death and has the highest costs for drug treatment in Sweden. For more than 25 years, the Cardiology research group has been a national centre for research and development in coronary artery disease and its complications, and in recent years stroke prevention during atrial fibrillation.

Description of our research

The research includes register based studies, cell biology research and large clinical trials with patients and healthy controls from many countries.

We aim to improve the treatment and management for the individual patient. We work in the following areas:

  • Disease prevalence and mechanisms of disease throughepidemiologic studies of registries and cohort and pathophysiology studies.
  • Diagnosis, risk assessment and precision medicine through biomarker studies and studies on imaging based diagnosis.
  • Assessment of old (and new) therapies through international clinical trials, independent registry based randomized clinical trials as well as observational registry- and cohort studies.
  • Implementation of new therapies through observational registry studies.
