Epidemiology of diabetes complications

To understand the incidence and prevalence of diabetes complication will help us tackle the most urgent public health problems to tackle.

Project description

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes carry increased risks of cardiovascular diseases like heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke. However, few direct comparisons between type 1 and type 2 diabetes in terms of risks of complications are available. In nationwide type 1 and type 2 diabetes cohorts in Sweden and Norway, we found that the risks of heart failure and myocardial infarction were higher in middle-aged to older patients with type 1 rather than with type 2 diabetes. The risk of chronic kidney disease was higher at all ages in type 1 patients, instead. Future studies will aim to examine these relationships more closely to understand what factors may be responsible for these observations.
